You are sipping a piece of Canadian wine history on July 1st when you open a bottle of Chateau des Charmes.

A Little History — Canada Day and Canadian Wine

Canada Day has been celebrated on July 1 since 1867, when the British North America Act united the provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single federation. One hundred and eleven years later, in 1978, a group of entrepreneurs founded Chateau des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake with the audacious goal of demonstrating that Canada could produce wines that could compete internationally and cultivate world-class vinifera grapes.

It was a pioneering bet. And it paid off. The first vintage came in 1978, and Chateau des Charmes went on to become one of the first Canadian wineries dedicated exclusively to noble vinifera varieties — Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gamay — the grapes that define the world’s great wine regions.

As a proud founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario, Chateau des Charmes is now one of Canada's Certified Sustainable Wineries. It also has a sparkling wine program that is among the best Methode Traditionnelle producers in the nation and was among the first to arrive.

The Perfect Canada Day Long Weekend Lineup

Whether you’re on the deck of a cottage in Muskoka, at a backyard party in the city, or setting up on a dock somewhere with a view, the right bottle makes the whole day better. Here’s what to pour this long weekend.

The Brut Sparkling Wine — Canada’s Finest Bubbles

This bottle is the one that embodies a celebration. Made using Methode Traditionnelle, the same process used to make Champagne in France, the Brut Sparkling Wine is a sophisticated blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that is matured on the lees for at least 18 months. The brioche, the toast, and the delicate, persistent bubbles that rise in precise lines are where the magic happens.

One of the first Canadian wineries to master Methode Traditionnelle sparkling wine was Chateau des Charmes. Recently Disgorged (RD) refers to the process of disgorging each bottle right before it leaves the winery, guaranteeing that the product that reaches your door is as vivid and fresh as possible. Creamy on the taste, perfectly dry, and designed for celebration.

Available in 750 mL for the table and 375 mL for two on the dock. Both on sale now.

Pro Tip: Chill the Brut for at least two hours before opening. Pop it outside, pour slowly, and let the bubbles do the talking.
