Vines, Lavender & Golden Hours: An Experience Worth Booking Before the Season Turns

That's what summer does in August. Even if the days are still long, warm, and abundant, you can feel the passing of time in the back of your mind. September is getting closer than it seems. The season's finest afternoons are limited.

Now is not the time to put items on your to-do list. Now is the moment to head out.

At Chateau des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Lavender & Vine experience is in full bloom - lavender beside the vines, sparkling wine in hand, the Chateau as your backdrop, and more photo-worthy moments per square metre than anywhere else in wine country right now. When you combine that with a private vineyard cabana, you get the kind of late summer afternoon that people remember long after the season is over.

The Season Is Still Yours — But Not for Long.

Lavender & Vine is a seasonal experience, and the most beautiful days to enjoy it are happening right now. The lavender is in bloom. The vines are lush and full. The late summer light on the estate is the kind that makes everything look like it was meant to be photographed. This combination - lavender, vines, sparkling wine, vineyard views, and golden-hour moments - is only available while the season allows.

Don't leave it until you've run out of summer. Book it now and give yourself the afternoon you've been planning since spring

Lavender & Vine: What It Actually Is

Chateau des Charmes and Terre Bleu, Ontario's renowned lavender brand, have partnered to create Lavender & Vine, an immersive summer experience at St. Davids' Bench that combines lavender blooms, vineyard views, and estate sparkling wine.

The centrepiece is the Yellow Door - Terre Bleu’s most iconic landmark - now installed among the vines and lavender rows at Chateau des Charmes. It's the type of environment that takes photographs of itself. When you go there and see it, you know right away why people keep returning for it.

Two experiences are available, designed for different types of visitors:

Lavender & Vine - Self-Guided Experience | $25

Take your time exploring the Lavender & Vine garden. Explore, take pictures, and take in the full summer color of the lavender and vines. Includes one glass of sparkling wine delivered in a commemorative take-home glass, with a $5 retail coupon for the Chateau boutique. The perfect afternoon for couples, friends, or anybody who wishes to move through the estate on their own terms.

Lavender & Vine - Self-Guided Experience with Seated Tasting | $45

After a brief introduction to Chateau des Charmes estate wines and the history of St. Davids' Bench during a seated tasting, take your commemorative glass of sparkling wine into the garden and explore at your own leisure. Comes with a $5 retail coupon and a glass to take home. For people who want to see everything in one place, including the wines, the winemaking, and the scenery.

The Best Photo Spots at Lavender & Vine

If you’re coming for the photos - and many people are - here’s where to point your camera:

📸 The Yellow Door. The iconic picture. It's one of the most spectacular backgrounds in Niagara wine country, with the vineyard behind it and lavender on each side. Morning light is softer; afternoon light is warmer and more golden. Both work.

📸 The Lavender Rows. Walk between the rows with your sparkling wine glass raised. The clear summer sky, the distant green vines, and the purple blooms combine to produce an almost effortless composition that looks amazing. Wear something colorful; the lavender looks stunning in photos.

📸 The Chateau Facade. One of the most architecturally striking buildings in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Use it as a backdrop for a full-length shot with your glass - the stone, the windows, and the Chateau signage make it unmistakable.

📸 The Vineyard Rows. Gaze back at the Chateau as you stroll down a row of vines. The rows form a natural frame when the canopy is full in late summer. For the most dramatic viewpoint, shoot from low to the ground or at eye level.

📸 Golden Hour. Make plans to stay late into the evening if you are visiting on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. In August, the light between 6 and 7 PM is completely different.

Pro Tip:To have a stroll in the garden before other visitors arrive, arrive 20 minutes before to your reservation. You'll have the Yellow Door to yourself for a short while, the crowds are smaller, and the early light is ideal.

Who This Is Perfect For

Lavender & Vine works for almost any kind of visit — but here are the occasions it was practically designed for:

💏 A date. This is one of the most really romantic afternoons in Niagara thanks to the lavender, sparkling wine, lovely surroundings, and private cabana option. Book the guided tour for the complete story, then transfer to a cabana for the rest of the afternoon.

👧👦 A girls’ trip or group outing. A group outing or a trip for girls. The garden is designed for parties that wish to explore together and is social and photo-friendly. Make a reservation for the self-guided option, bring your party, and spend as much time as you like.

🎂 A birthday celebration. When you combine Lavender & Vine with a vineyard cabana for the birthday person, you've given them something truly unforgettable: the garden, the pictures, two hours of private outdoor eating, and afternoon estate wine.

📷 A content day or photoshoot.  Within walking distance of one another, the estate offers a variety of unique backdrops. Take a few hours to take pictures of the grape rows, the lavender garden, and the Chateau facade with your phone or camera. Few places in Ontario's wine country provide this much visual diversity in a single visit.

👫 A spontaneous late-summer afternoon. While reservations are strongly advised for Lavender & Vine, walk-ins are allowed at Chateau des Charmes. Make sure it's available, take a drive, and enjoy the afternoon you've been wanting since June.

Add a Vineyard Cabana and Make It a Full Day

The Vineyard Cabana  is the main event, if the Lavender & Vine experience is the opening act.

A secluded cabana with expansive views of St. Davids’ Bench, the 72-acre estate vineyard that yields every grape in the Chateau des Charmes range, is yours for two hours. From arrival to the last drink, a committed host handles every aspect of your stay, providing concierge-style service.

A bottle of estate wine for the table, a cheese and charcuterie board made with locally produced food, and a welcome toast of Brut Sparkling for two are all included in your cabana experience. The type of setup that appears effortless since it was created by someone else.

The Wine in Your Glass

Chateau des Charmes sparkling wines are the foundation of Lavender & Vine, and for good cause. One of the first Canadian wineries to master Methode Traditionnelle sparkling production was Chateau des Charmes. One of the best estate sparkling wines in the nation is the Brut Sparkling, which is served at the cabana and is at least 18 months old on the lees. It has won Bronze medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge.

It makes perfect sense to have a glass of sparkling wine next to a lavender garden, with the Chateau in the background and the vines behind you. It doesn't require an explanation. All you have to do is drink.

Book Before The Season Turns

At Chateau des Charmes, 1025 York Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lavender & Vine is currently open. There is not much time left in the season. Weekends in August are packed. Now is the perfect moment to reserve the late summer afternoon you've been dreaming of or the one you didn't realize you needed.

Pro Tip: The Friday through Sunday seasonal food menu is also available on the terrace and outdoor areas. Stay for the golden hour light, stay for a drink, and stay for a snack. Every minute of the drive is worthwhile.
