Farmers & Custodians
On the Farm
We have always believed we are custodians of the land. Not because it's trendy but because it’s simply the right thing to do. Farmers are known to be resourceful people. So many of the things we do that can be called “sustainable” or “green” are actually just practical. And with 280 acres of vineyards to farm, practicality is very important!
Here are some of the things we do:
- Chemical herbicides are never used
- Skins, stems and seeds left over after grapes are pressed are returned to the vineyard as fertilizer
- Composted manure from local farms is also used as fertilizer
- Water used to wash tanks and barrels in the cellar is filtered in a lagoon at the back of the St. David’s Bench Vineyard and this filtered water is used in our sprinkler system to water grass and flowers around the winery
- The glass bottles used for Generation Seven wines are lighter weight glass which helps to reduce our carbon footprint
- The labels and other printed information use only FSC papers
- In the winery we have an extensive recycling program including organics
