A Family Tradition
Our Family
Seven generations of our family have been born into the wine business. We have grown grapes and made wine on three continents: Europe, Africa and now North America. Today the 5th and 6th generations are building a legacy that one day, maybe, the 7th generation will want to be a part of.
Here is a bit of our family tree.
Generation Five
Paul Bosc
Paul arrived in Canada in 1963 with his wife Andrée and young son Paul Jr.. He learned about Niagara terroir through his work with Château Gai as Winemaker and eventually Director of Research. When he founded Château des Charmes in 1978 Paul was the first in Canada to plant a vineyard dedicated exclusively to vitis vinifera; European grape varieties that produce the world's finest wines. Paul is a graduate graduate of the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France in Oenology and Viticulture. Paul's pioneering work in the modern Canadian wine industry has brought many accolades and honours including an honorary doctorate from Brock University, The Order of Ontario, The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal the inaugural Canadian Vintners Association Award of Distinction and is a member of The Order of Canada.
Andrée Bosc
Paul Bosc Sr.'s wife holds a B.A. from Brock University and a Master of Public Administration from Niagara University. She is a former French teacher who regularly welcomes former students to the winery. Madame, as she is called, is a wonderful ambassador for the winery who is active in the community and charitable events. In 2006 she, along with her husband, were named Niagara-on-the-Lake's Citizens of the Year and were presented with the Lord Mayor's Award of Excellence.
Generation Six
Paul Bosc Jr.
Paul is responsible for sales, marketing and administration at Château des Charmes. He is active in wine industry affairs and in the economic and cultural development of the Niagara Peninsula. He is Chair of the Canadian Vintners Association and Director of the Wine Council of Ontario. Paul graduated from the University of Toronto and has received many accolades and awards including being a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Easter Seals Society of Ontario. In 2004 he accepted the LCBO VQA Excellence Award.
Michèle Bosc
Paul Jr.'s wife earned a B. Sc. from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. Through her experience in the pharmaceutical and advertising industries, Michèle has gained a wealth of experience in sales, sales training and marketing. As Director of Marketing she is responsible for staff training and development, trade relations, advertising, marketing and tourism/events programs. She is also a committee member of various marketing and tourism organizations in the region including the Wine Council of Ontario's Marketing and Tourism committees and the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake steering committee.
Generation Seven
Alexandre Bosc
Alex is the light in his grandparents' hearts and is known to run his parents, Paul and Michèle, ragged. He was introduced to our way of life when he was just three days old. Since then he loves to go for walks in "Papa's" vineyards and visit everyone at the winery. And sometimes he will let you say a word in the conversation.
